Резюме на лекцията:
Nuclear fusion has the promise to make a new power source – making a star on Earth could be cheap, have no green house emission, limitless fuel and have 1000x less radiation and no safety concerns compared to current fission nuclear power plants. However – the technical problems are still very large and a new power plant still seems many years away. In the last few years, inertial confinement fusion – using massive lasers to compress fuel – has achieved fusion gain, creating 3x the energy out compared to the laser energy sent in and creating a new state of matter – a fusion burning plasma. This talk will share the status, progress and current challenges of nuclear fusion and the physics of inertial confinement fusion and how America and Europe are positioning themselves and investing to take advantage of the recent progress.

Dr. Kevin Meaney is a physicist from Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA. His research interests focus on nuclear diagnostics and the dynamics of fusion burning hot spots.
