Exploring the Dark Universe with Euclid
Most of the matter in the Universe is invisible—we cannot see it directly, but its gravitational effects reveal its presence. One of the most powerful methods to investigate this dark matter is through the distortion of space-time, a phenomenon we can observe thanks to weak gravitational lensing.
The newly launched Euclid space telescope (July 1st, 2023) will revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos. Over the next six years, Euclid will map one-third of the sky in high resolution, providing the most detailed map of dark matter ever created.
In this lecture, Prof. Hoekstra will introduce the scientific goals of the Euclid mission and explain how it will transform many aspects of modern astronomy.
Prof. Dr. Henk Hoekstra is a professor of observational cosmology at Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, Netherlands. He has been actively involved in the development of the Euclid mission since 2011 and continues to play a leading role in the project. His research focuses on mapping dark matter using weak gravitational lensing and studying dark energy—the mysterious force driving the accelerated expansion of the Universe.
